Dying Swan In The Tropics

Words Vera Shaban

Inspired by the life of phenomenal Russian prima ballerina, Anna Pavlova, and a recent trip to the tropics. Naeem Khan’s new Spring/Summer 18 Collection delivered drama and plenty of vibrant hues in canary yellow, luxurious red and blossom pink.  Combining lace with silk fringe to create awe-inspiring, a line skirts, ground sweeping gowns and cocktail dresses. Intricate details of the collection included elaborate beading and embroidery on floor-length kimonos, pants, and gowns. Additional highlights were the designer’s use of floating tulle, raffia-like fringe, and extravagant silhouettes. Like the audience, the whimsical high neckline delicate white gown hinted with soft ruffles mesmerized me.

Personally, I don't think Anna Pavlova was beautiful, but she was, photogenic, and her beauty - was from so many emotions and feminine deference going on inside of her. Even if her features were not the most captivating, she always looked gorgeous. Anna had a passion for shopping and fashion, constantly going to small and big shops. Purchasing an abundance of clothing and hats, which she always asked designers to remake.

Part of Anna’s dazzling lifestyle was clearly etched into Khan’s collection. Referencing the ballerina’s charming style with a tropical twist. The designer modernized the ballerina’s silk pajamas she once wore to Paris into a contemporary lux suit. Anna’s vision of how she saw the world differently influenced Naeem Khan’s approach on tailoring a collection goes beyond just beautiful, its practical, sophisticated and romantic.
