Calling On The Fearless... Zero + Maria Cornejo

Words Vera Shaban

Maria was born in Chile and moved to England when she was a young child. Later, moving to New York City with her family where she established her own brand in 1998. Her flourishing career covers London, Milan, and Tokyo.

Even though Maria spent most of her life in Europe, she still has a passion for working with raw textiles. Such as organic Chilean linen, sustainable denim, and quilted silk. And It’s interesting the designer's use of very simple natural fabrics to mix with prints.

The label always highlighted form, new cutting techniques and clean geometric shapes. To stress the beauty of using natural materials. And for twenty years Maria devoted her label to tailor essential luxury for women to feel good.

For Spring Summer 2019, Maria Cornejo collection was very diverse and contemporary.  A beautiful spectrum of women in rich textures, eye-catching prints, and elaborate patterns. Maria Cornejo mentioned, “It’s about to using your voice right now, as a woman, and standing up to be counted.”  A woman who is unafraid to demonstrate the power of their femininity - this is the strength of women that she loves.

Gathering inspiration from the iconic work of Chilean artist Garcia Barrios. The cotton print Maria uses features the abstract faces of extraordinary women who have broken down barriers in their field. Very complex paper-light plissé rain-coating, graphic textured jacquards, and evening satin. All rendered in a palette of canvas, indigo, mud black, guava and stone.

Without a doubt, Simplicity is always grace in Maria’s design approach. Delivering a collection that’s immaculate, feminine and unembellished.
